The GICR e-learning Series
The GICR e-learning Series is an exciting new set of learning modules developed to help compliment existing material and to make cancer registry education accessible to a greater number of people.
The GICR e-learning Series consists of modules that can be used for comprehensive training in the principles and practice of cancer registration.
Currently, the Series consists of a pre-course preparation module that provides foundational knowledge in how cancer is defined and the function of cancer control and registration. The remaining 15 modules cover all aspects of data collection, coding, data management, and analyses. Each module is interactive, denoted by their number and title. For example, M7 Staging of Cancer refers to the seventh module, titled Staging of Cancer. Modules are further divided into sessions, which cover key content areas and have specific learning object.
Each module concludes with a final quiz to measure learning. To receive a certificate of completion for a module, users must attain a grade of 80% on the final quiz. The final quiz can be attempted up to a maximum of three times. Users who do not receive a passing grade with this allotted number of attempts will need to redo the entire module before being able to do the final quiz again.
There are two levels of learning – basic and intermediate – which are contained within the sessions of individual modules.
- Basic lessons contain concepts that are considered fundamental to cancer registration. In other words, the learning objectives are a starting point for working in cancer registry or with cancer registry data. At the completion of the basic sessions, the learner should possess the essential level of knowledge needed.
- Intermediate sessions cover topics in greater detail and contain content that extends beyond minimum knowledge and skills in cancer registration.
The GICR e-learning Series offers suggested learning streams that group together sessions within modules that are considered to provide the different levels of knowledge and skill needed for specific roles within the cancer registry. The streams are separated into three broad areas of knowledge and skill.
This table provides the suggested lessons by module as a learning path for users to follow according to the Learning Stream they select. Please note that it is not mandatory to follow a Learning Stream.

Will I have help ?
Additional learning help and support is available for users of the GICR e-learning Series. Through the GICR Regional Hubs and associated Centers of Expertise, a network of regional trainers has been created, called the GICRNet. These trainers are listed on the GICR webpage and are available to assist.
Getting started ?
To make the best use of the GICR e-learning Series, it is recommended that you read through the User Guide and Course Syllabus. This will provide you with all the necessary information to select the learning path best suited to your needs.
